A ListWhat is a LIST? The answer is really rather simple: people you can communicate with (market to). Yes, you have email and a few folks you communicate with - some that you care about very much. But, if someone told you they would give you a million dollars only if you found 10 other folks to also take a million dollars at the same time you got it, and if you had to do it in a short period of time you would probably contact folks you care about or that would be responsive (you wouldn't want to miss out by not getting the ten folks in time). This is in fact WHAT a list is all about, folks that look forward to hearing from you and who are responsive. There are a few areas that, in order to go through the process of list building, you must invest some money to make things work best. I, myself, believe I am very frugal (some say cheap) when it comes to spending money. Having said this, I can tell you I have tried and struggled with some cheap and free stuff that almost made me quit or give up. I've spent, and in some cases wasted, gobs of time searching for free or cheap tools, only to realize that was exactly what I found - cheap and ineffective. As I share some of my experiences with you I will tell you about the free and cheap, if that's the direction you need, or want, to go. I will be sharing some stuff with you for free that is very valuable. Internet Presence - A Domain NameWhat is a DOMAIN NAME? A domain name, is the address that people find you at, just like your street address, on the Net. A domain is also somtimes referred to as a "URL", usually with the WWW. that stands for World Wide Web. An example is my domain name - www.frankdimond.com - the address you would type in (or copy and paste) to come to this location (my domain). A domain name is something you can get for free if you use someone else's, however it will never be your own. And, it's very important that it be your own, if you're going to become "known" on the Internet. There are a LOT of places on the net you can purchase your domain name. The first thing to decide before you go looking is what you want your domain name to be and why. I have a number of different addresses now but I primarily use www.frankdimond.com. I would strongly recommend that if you can get your name as an address (joesmith.com or joesmith.biz or even joesmith.name) it's the best place to start. Now what does one do once they have a name (domain)? Well a domain's like a phone number: it's nice to have one but if you don't have a phone no one can reach or contact you. The same is true with a domain you gotta have the phone (hosting) to be reached. Hosting your domain allows folks to find you. There are places out there on the net you can find to host for free, or no charge. However, if you go this route, there is usually some type of advertisement you have to put up with on your website. This, in many cases, also means there is no support if you need help, as in the case your site is down - just like the phone if they can't get your number or it's always busy. Hosting companies provide you presence on the Net and good ones are available 99.9% of the time. Hosting is definitely one of those things that is worthwhile spending the few dollars to have. If you want to build a biz on the net and continue to earn income than it's one of those expenses (investments) that pays off. Some folks even find Hosting companies that will pay you for referring others and end up not costing you anything. In some cases, you can even earn a referral commission. Hosting can be found in most areas to be payable on a monthly basis like your phone, cable or satellite bill. This way, you are not paying up front, but as you use it to produce an income. Incidentally, I have a tool available to you for hosting services. Just take a look at my "Products & Services" page to get a hosting account. There's some great website building tools there as well. |
